From Conflict Resolution to Collaboration Architecture: The Necessary Evolution of Our | עמרי גפן

March 9, 2026

“What did you say? Meditation?” “You’re saying that in the future there will be an academic degree in Alternative Dispute Resolution? You’re living in a fantasy…”

These quotes from the 1980s and 90s remind us of the early days of Mediation and modern Negotiation. Back then, only a handful of pioneers understood the mission of the professional bodies just starting to emerge. We have come a long way in four decades – professionalizing, achieving integration across business and legal sectors, and building a robust intellectual infrastructure.

Yet, we must ask ourselves: Have Mediation and modern Negotiation reached a point of stagnation? While we once represented cutting-edge innovation, we now risk becoming disconnected from a rapidly evolving world. As globalization, AI, and political polarization intensify, our world is characterized by “Disruption” and unprecedented complexity.

In this reality, traditional conflict resolution methods alone cannot address our global challenges. When academic and training organizations remain narrowly focused on dispute resolution as their primary domain, they risk becoming irrelevant. We must realize that conflicts are primarily an expression of relationships gone wrong. Focusing only on the conflict narrows the picture; we must instead look at the broader ecosystem of Collaboration.

The Paradigm Shift: From Resolver to Architect

I am advocating for a fundamental reconceptualization: positioning conflict and negotiation expertise within a broader framework of Collaboration. This is not about dismissing established methods like Transformative or Narrative mediation, which remain valuable. It is about defining our professional arena as the field of Collaboration – including partnerships, interfaces, and collective impact – with conflict management serving as a central pillar.

This evolution led to the definition of a new, essential profession: the Chief Collaboration Officer – CCO.

The Rise of the CCO

The CCO serves as the architect of an organization’s collaborative capabilities, strategic partnerships, and relational infrastructure. This senior executive, reporting directly to the CEO, focuses on Collaboration from a systemic perspective.

Why a Dedicated Role?

One might ask: why not rely on existing HR, CIO, or COO roles? While these positions bring valuable perspectives, combining collaboration with an existing role often relegates it to a secondary priority. Significant change requires professional differentiation, specialized training, and strong positioning within the system. Just as we would not expect a CEO to manage complex HR challenges without a dedicated professional, the era of complexity demands a dedicated expert in Collaboration.

A Global Vision for the Future

This vision goes beyond the corporate boardroom. Imagine a global network of CCOs spanning government ministries, security organizations, and civil society. Operating with a unified language and shared frameworks, these leaders would create an unprecedented capacity for coordinated action against pandemics, climate disasters, and social upheavals.

The understanding that everything lies in long-term relationships was the catalyst for my own evolution and that of my organization-the first Mediation and Negotiation body in Israel, established in the wake of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The future belongs not merely to those who can resolve disputes, but to those who can architect and sustain the collaborative ecosystems that our complex world demands. It is time to evolve beyond conflict-centered approaches and embrace the broader collaborative paradigm.
